Aspendos — An Evening in a 2,000-Year-Old Theatre

Day 7 of 10EveningDeparts Mira Palace SideDraft — owner to review

The best-preserved Roman theatre on earth, in the last hour of daylight.

Highlights

  • Generally accepted as the most complete Roman theatre still standing anywhere on earth
  • Acoustics so preserved a coin dropped centre-stage can be heard in the top row
  • Cohorts 5 & 6: reserved seats at the Aspendos International Opera & Ballet Festival, under the open sky
  • All other cohorts: the theatre at golden hour, after the coaches have gone — with a musician playing for our group alone
  • A long-table dinner in the Belkıs valley below the ruins
  • The day itself is yours — pool, beach and spa until the late-afternoon departure

Your day, in full

The daytime belongs to you — the pool, the beach, the spa, or absolutely nothing at all. Then, in the late afternoon, the road west from Side rises into golden light, and the week arrives at its most extraordinary building.

Aspendos is generally accepted as the most complete Roman theatre still standing anywhere. Two thousand years after its stones were set, the acoustics remain so precise that a coin dropped at centre-stage can be heard in the top row. What happens once you take your seat depends on when your cohort travels — both versions of this evening are described below, and both end the same way: dinner in the valley beneath the ruins, and the drive home under stars.

Festival night

Cohorts 5 & 6 — travelling during the Aspendos International Opera & Ballet Festival (mid-September to early October)

Guests take their reserved seats as the sun goes down and one of the world's touring opera or ballet companies takes the stage for the Aspendos International Opera & Ballet Festival. The programme changes each season — Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and a symphonic evening are the festival's stock-in-trade — and the specific night is chosen for each cohort once the season's calendar is confirmed.

Dinner is served at a garden restaurant nearby — before curtain or after it, as the performance timing allows — and the applause inside a 2,000-year-old stone bowl is something guests tend to describe with their hands rather than their words.

A private evening at the theatre

Cohorts 1–4 and 7–9 — travelling outside the festival window

Outside the festival weeks the plan shifts and, arguably, gains in intimacy. Guests arrive at Aspendos in the last hour of daylight, when the tour coaches have gone and the stone glows amber. A private guide walks the group through the theatre — the stage, the galleries, the engineering that has outlasted empires — and then everyone sits, and a musician arranged by CONNECT plays a short set from the orchestra floor, for our group alone. Twenty people, two thousand years of acoustics, and nobody else.

Dinner follows at a curated restaurant in the Belkıs valley below the ruins — grilled Antalya seabass, local wines, one long table, and no reason at all to hurry.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes — the theatre's stone steps are original, and proud of it
  • A light layer for after dark; the stone cools quickly once the sun is gone
  • A camera, or a phone with room left on it

The full concierge packing guide lives at What to Bring.

Know before you go

  • Which evening you experience depends on your cohort dates — the festival window runs from mid-September to early October; every other cohort enjoys the private evening
  • Festival programmes are published by the festival in late spring; your specific performance is confirmed ahead of travel
  • Seating is ancient stone — cushions are provided
  • This is the latest evening of the week so far; the following morning is deliberately gentle
